The Art of
Roxana Romero-Vega
“Roxana’s artwork is a classic rendering of things imagined similar to retro cartoons, to whimsical depictions of animals in a variety of interesting scenarios. There is always a twist into the dark side of life.” -ArtBattleSF

Grounded in the clouds
When the opportunity presented itself to work on the album artwork for a musician such as Lauren Bradford quite literally on my lap during what I would now recall as a tumble into another depressive episode working a 9-5 in a job I was unenthusiastic about, I could hardly believe my life; I cried a lot as I struggled with perfectionism and an introduction to digital artwork. Being called upon to listen to Lauren's melodic folksy music alone was a blessing let alone be coached by her to bring to fruition the feeling of her entire second disc, the setting would have to be my childhood home, nothing other would suffice, because one never really forgets the feeling of comfort and support one normally only receives as a child.

Solitude and Longitude
Learning to re-evaluate the direction of my artistic drive was a huge milestone in the year 2018, with other secret book illustrations underway, being away from family for the first time and hating it led me to delve into some really creepy concepts. With the help of various guiding illustrators such as Will Terry's idea of challenging his viewers to include at the minimum of 50 details in a piece of artwork designed for a book, the challenges set forth in October and a looming sense of free-time, these images pooled out of me in an attempt to fill an empty void left by leaving my roots behind for longer than I would have liked. Now, they represent a woman who was a bit lost in a budding friendship with her cat to keep her company, now since deceased and forever in my heart.

Changes in frequency
Whilst still living away from home and preparing to return to my hometown, at the onset of major life altering changes including a pandemic, I dove head first into painting in a fury, a panic and an attempt to escape the ever growing sense of anxiety, depression, loneliness and fear that comes with time, with loosing, with changing.
Loss is a key point to the sudden introduction of color into my world where all seemed bleak and the sensation of death lie in waiting in the background. However, with this darkness comes the greatest strides I've made artistically. Thanks to the artist Edmond in a Oregon based watercolor class, I learned how to paint with watercolor for about a year. Some of my most cherished memories.
